VELLORE, DEC.16. The 105-year-old Voorhees College, Vellore, has appliedto the State government for grant of autonomous status, according to the Bishop of the Church of South India (CSI) Vellore, Diocese and chairman of the college governing board, Rev.Y. William. Presiding over the 2-day centenary celebrations of the college, Rev. William, expressed his gratitude to the Reformed Church of America (RCA) missionaries who founded the college. Realising that the academic freedom of the teachers was crucial to education, several education commissions have opined that autonomy was an instrument in promoting the academic excellence of colleges. Hence the college governing board has permitted the college to seek autonomy, he said. The Bishop said that the college also desired to make the institution co-educational for the under-graduate courses as well. It would explore the ways and means of empowering the weaker sections of the society. The Vellore Collector, S.Gopalakrishnan, declaring open the centenary arch at the entrance to the college, said that the college has carved a place for itself. Speaking at the Founders' Day event, forming part of the centenary celebrations, Vice-Consul of the U.S. in Chennai, Gordon S. Church wanted people to devote some thought to the children of parents living in poverty, who have no opportunities for higher education.
