Bill on Legislative Council introduced
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
DEC. 16.
A bill to provide for the creation of Legislative Council in Andhra Pradesh was introduced in the Lok Sabha today.
In its statement of objects and reasons, the Government said that under Article 169 (1) of the Constitution, Parliament may, by law, provide for the creation of a Legislative Council in a State which did not have one, provided the State Legislative Assembly passes a resolution to that effect by a two-third majority.
It said on July 8, this year the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a resolution for the creation of the Legislative Council. The proposed Council would have the same number of seats as it had when it was abolished by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council (Abolition) Act from June 1, 1985.
