Youth dies in suicide pact by two couples

By Our Staff Correspondent

PANAJI, DEC. 16. In what appears to be a suicide pact involving two young couples, a youth from Bangalore died here in the early hours of today. His girlfriend and another couple have been admitted to hospital.

Police gave the name of the dead as Shivaji. They said Shivaji and his girlfriend, Sushma, who had checked into a hotel, took poison. Later, he hanged himself to death, the police said. Sushma is in a critical condition.

The couple's friends, Girish and Hemalatha, alias Rekha, also consumed poison in another room in the hotel, the police said. They are said to be out of danger.

The Panaji Sub-divisional Police Officer, Vaman Tari, who is investigating the case, told The Hindu that the couples had gone to Dharmasthala on December 12 and then to Mangalore. They reached Panaji on Wednesday.

He said Girish had informed the hotel reception that he and the others had taken poison and needed help. The hotel staff informed the police and shifted Girish, Hemalatha and Sushma to Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim.

After taking poison, Girish had tried to hang himself, the police said. According to the police, the couples feared that there would be opposition to their marriage.
