HYDERABAD, DEC. 16. The stage is set for the largest-ever Anti-War Assembly (AWA) to be held in the city from Friday. Participants at the three-day meeting include victims of different wars and suppression by imperialists from several countries including France, Italy, Japan, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Philippines, Egypt, the USA, the UK and South Africa apart from over two dozen anti-war activists. At a press conference here on Thursday, Meena Menon and Prabir Purkayastha, coordinators of the AWA, said the conference was part of the worldwide mobilisation, which was on against the USA and other imperialist forces and their military policies. It would be a gathering of victims and those working in the affected regions and experiences would be shared. Of particular interest would be the participation of two Iraqis -- Sheikh Hassan Zarkani and Khudur-al-Azawi -- both of whom had been exiled for several years in Lebanon and Denmark respectively. Also present for the occasion would be Mamdouh Habashi from Egypt, a civil engineer-turned-anti-war activist, and Salim Vally, a former high school student activist in the mid-70s, a teacher and trade unionist from South Africa, now a spokesperson for the Anti-War Coalition.
