BANGALORE, DEC. 16. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opposed the restrictions imposed by the State Government on celebrating Datta Jayanti at Bababudangiri in Chikmagalur district and threatened to launch a Statewide agitation from Monday if the restrictions are not lifted.
`Allow puja'
Addressing presspersons here today, the BJP MLA for Chikmagalur, C.T. Ravi, said the party wants the Government to allow "pada puja" and "homa" during Datta Jayanti. It is against imposing restrictions during the Shoba Yatra to be taken out prior to the Datta Jayanti celebrations from December 24. The BJP will also organise a demonstration in Chikmagalur on Friday to urge the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to lift the restrictions imposed by the district administration.
Agreement
Mr. Ravi said "pada puja" and "homa" will be held this year also and the district administration has no right to curb the religious rights of Hindus. The leaders at the all-party meeting had agreed that the Datta Jayanti celebrations should not be stopped and that it should be held as it was up to 1975. Unfortunately, some organisations have wrongly interpreted the Supreme Court verdict on the issue and are attempting to stall the celebrations, he said.
