NELLORE, DEC. 16. The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, has promised the people of Nellore town of establishment of an art gallery. Formally declaring open the 9th State-level painting exhibition, organised by the Simhapuri Fine Art Academy at Nellore on Thursday, he however wanted the sponsors to provide the land and asserted that the administration would provide the necessary assistance. Responding to the plea to protect artefacts at the Talpagiri Ranganathaswamy Temple, the Collector disclosed that an exercise in this regard had already commenced with the assistance of the Archaeology Department. The aim was to mainly protect the beautiful art work inside the `Addala Mandapam' (Hall of Mirrors) of the temple. Such a work would go a long way in protecting the treasure of art, said Mr. Rajsekhar. At the same time, he regretted that people possessing the required skill were not available and accordingly, advised the academy to depute some of its members for preservation of work.

About assistance to old artistes, the official reminded that only last week more than 100 artistes received an increased pension of Rs. 400 per month, at a function held at the District Public Relations Office. Regarding housing for artistes, he said that the administration had been receiving a number of requests from different quarters and it had decided to acquire land in and around Nellore. On measures to encourage artistes, Mr. Rajsekhar said that very recently, the administration brought a troupe from Ongole, headed by Ananda Rao, which staged a play `Padamati Gali' (Western Wind) at Nellore, for four days, thereby encouraging more than 70 artistes. The play was aimed at weaning away farmers from suicides. The four-day exhibition contains more than 400 paintings from all over the State. The founder-president of the academy, A.
