Protest against open auction of fish stalls

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, DEC. 16. The Nellore Town Fisherwomen Cooperative Society has urged the Chief Minister, Y S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to direct the Nellore municipal authorities to permit them to sell fish at the local market without insisting on open auction.

The society members, who staged a dharna here on Thursday, said in a memorandum that for several years they were selling fish at the municipal market on the Dicon road. Till a few years ago about 300 women used to sell fish and later all of them became members of the cooperative society.

They complained that the municipal authorities had decided to auction the stalls in the fish market. Owing to this, influential contractors were cornering the stalls, they alleged. They said because of such action, they were displaced and unable to sell fish. They urged the Government to permit them to sell fish at the market without insisting on participation in the open auction.
