APSP sports meet ends

KURNOOL: The 49th sports meet of APSP battalion here concluded on Thursday. The Collector, Vikas Raj, the Commandant, Bose Reddy, and others took part. The Collector promised help for creating basic facilities in the residential colony of APSP families. Padma Sankar Naik, wife of the Joint Collector, gave away the prizes to winners. The Additional Commandant, Varaprasad, the Assistant Commandants -- Arthur and Nasiruddin -- were present.

Reliance opens new facility

TIRUPATI: Reliance has unveiled its broadband facility here on Wednesday. It will help denizens of Tirupati to interact with their friends and relatives in any corner of the world. Galla Ramachandra Naidu, the chairman of Amara Raja group inaugurated the facility at Reliance Web World on Tilak road here. .

Three die in highway mishap

NELLORE: Three persons were killed in an accident on the national highway near Nayudupet of the district late on Wednesday night. According to available information, the mishap occurred when a jeep and a lorry collided. The dead included two members of the same family.

Consumer fair from today

NELLORE: A `National Consumer Fair' is to be held at the YMCA grounds here for 40 days commencing Friday. The Director of the Exhibition, Gowtam Agarwal, told reporters here, on Thursday that the the fair would contain a number of amusement and entertaining items, including a `Dashing Car' from Australia and `Tora Tora' from Italy. It would also have a number of food courts.

Dharna staged

CHITTOOR: Members of the district union of anganwadi workers and helpers, along with CITU members, took out a procession from the railway station to the Collectorate and staged a dharna asking the Government to pay salaries on a par with the members of other States. They urged the Government to sanction house sites, ration cards and construction of pakka houses.

Amarjeevi remembered

MADANAPALLE: The Public English Medium School, observed the death anniversary of Potti Sreeramulu's on December 15. Its headmaster, Ashrafi, presided and said that Potti Sreeramulu had sacrificed his life for formation of Andhra Pradesh State on linguistic basis. Mr. Sajid Ali Khan was the chief guest. The physical education director, Raju, and the NCC Officer, N. Muralidhan Naidu participated.

Aided college lecturers seek pay revision

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Aided Degree College Lecturers' Association has demanded revision of pay scales of aided degree college lecturers.

At a meeting with the Pay Revision Commission, the association said the Government was adopting two different pay scales for the same of post in degree colleges. "A section of lecturers get UGC scales while others get the state pay scales," M. Yadagiri, general secretary of the association said.

The association also highlighted other issues like enhancement of HRS, better pension benefits for retired lecturers and setting up of a grievances redressal cell in the administration, according to a press release.

Telangana officers' plea to PRC

Hyderabad: A delegation of the Telangana Gazetted Officers' Central Association made several proposals before the Pay Revision Commissioner, J. Rambabu, here on Thursday.

The team, led by the association president, E. Venkatesham, and the general secretary, Mohd. Faheemuddin, sought introduction of a master-scale in the range of Rs. 4,100-45,050 for Government employee in view of the rising prices, transportation charges, electricity and telephone bills, medical expenses and educational needs of children.

The existing master-scale is Rs 2,650-19,675.

Training for RTC staff

HYDERABAD: The State Road Transport Corporation is launching a training programme christened `Prayanikule jeevanadharam' for all drivers, conductors and traffic supervisors on marketing strategies.

Identified divisional managers, principals of training colleges, deputy chief mechanical engineers and deputy chief personal managers will conduct the programme. A two-day orientation programme was launched here for trainers.

The RTC Managing Director, P. Gautam Kumar, said that attitudinal change among employees had increased the revenue. He called upon managers to inculcate the habit of focusing on customer need, reorient their outlook in publicising the marketing schemes and attain total customer satisfaction.

Vijay Diwas celebrated

HYDERABAD: Officers of defence services celebrated the Vijay Diwas at the War Memorial at Parade grounds by paying homage to the valiant soldiers, who laid down their lives for the country in the 1971 war.

Lt. Gen. V.C. Jain, Commandant, Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) laid the wreath at the War Memorial. Senior officers of the station and senior retired officers of the three defence services and civilian dignitaries, including the district Collector, Arvind Kumar, and the City Police Commissioner, V. Dinesh Reddy, were present.

Fair deal to beedi workers sought

HYDERABAD: A delegation of CPI (M) MLAs and Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Labour Union met the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday and appealed to him to hike the rate of beedi (tendu) leaf collection and declare a bonus to the workers.

Addressing a press conference, Sunnam Rajaiah, K. Venkatanarasiah and M. Narasimha, MLAs, and B. Venkat of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Labour Union, wanted the Government to increse the rate from 60 paise to Rs. 1.25 for a bundle of 50 leaves to beedi workers. This would go a long way in mitigating their sufferings.

They said the Chief Minister had assured them of considering the demand and organising a meeting soon.

World Bank urged to release promised aid

Hyderabad: The Municipal Administration Minister, K. Ranga Rao, has urged the World Bank team to release by January-end, the Rs. 1,380-crore assistance promised for developing infrastructural facilities in 42 Grade I towns in the State.

The team, led by Richard Beardmore, a top bank official, met the Minister at the Secretariat on Thursday to discuss the project. The Minister told the team that the project was aimed at improving the living conditions of urban people, especially those in slums.

It would fund construction of roads, drains, water supply schemes, street-lighting and solid waste management.

Mr. Ranga Rao made it clear that the funds would not be spent on commercial items such as shopping complexes.

The Principal Secretary, R.S. Rao, explained to the team that the municipalities would get 70 per cent of the assistance as loan and 20 per cent as a grant.

The civic bodies would have to make their contribution to the tune of 10 per cent.

Reopen Prudential bank: PJR

Hyderabad: The Congress MLA, P. Janardhan Reddy, submitted memoranda to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, on Thursday and pleaded for the reopening of Prudential Cooperative Bank.

The liquidation of the bank was unwarranted and it would help protect borrowers evading payment, he said. Employees of the bank and depositors must not be put to further trouble, he said.

Likewise, all the sick industries in and around Hyderabad which were closed or under lock-out must be reopened without further delay, he said.

Starvation death in Sircilla?

KARIMNAGAR: A powerloom weaver, D. Poshetty (50), reportedly died of starvation due to unemployment

and ill-health at Geethanagar of Sircilla town on Thursday.

According to reports, the weaver had not been not getting any employment since last one month following crisis in the powerloom sector. He is survived by wife, two daughters and a son.

Drop in night temperature

Hyderabad: The State's lowest night temperature fell to 11 degree Celsius on Thursday and it was recorded by Medak.

There was no change in the minimum temperature in the State for the day. Weather was dry.

The weather will be mainly dry on Friday, according to the Met office.
