KOZHIKODE, DEC. 16. The three-day Malappuram district conference of the CPI(M) ended at Perinthalmanna today demanding effective steps by the Central and State Governments for the release of the People's Democratic Part chief, Abdul Nasir Maudany, on bail and for proper medical care. The meet was the first in a series of CPI(M) district conferences being held as a run-up to the State conference. The meet had evoked interest since it was being held in the stronghold of the Indian Union Muslim League. The CPI(M) candidate T.K. Hamza had routed an IUML candidate in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Manjeri constituency forming part of the district. A resolution adopted at the conference today said though the CPI(M) did not agree with the PDP's brand of politics, it felt Maudany's release had to be obtained as he had been kept in jail in Coimbatore for a protracted period. He, like any other citizen, should not be denied protection of the law. The resolution is in line with the thinking of the party State leadership.
Resignation sought
Other resolutions adopted by the conference demanded dismissal of the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, from the Oommen Chandy Government, a judicial inquiry into the ice cream parlour sex scandal and a comprehensive investigation to bring to book the `big sharks' involved in the hawala racket. A resolution said only the small fry involved the hawala racket had been nabbed so far. K. Syedalikutty, a senior CPI(M) leader, was elected secretary of the district committee. He returns to the post from which he had stepped down due to ill health sometime ago. The post was being held by K. Ummer Master since then. A 35-member district committee which includes 25 members who would be delegates to the State conference was selected at the final day. A party spokesman said the elections were unanimous.
