Baglihar: `No merit in Pakistan's objections'

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, DEC. 16. India and Pakistan appear headed for a confrontation over construction of the Baglihar power project on the Chenab. New Delhi has rejected the Islamabad's contention that the design and height of the dam is in violation of the Indus River Waters Treaty. The Joint Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry, Arun Kumar Singh, who is here in connection with the talks on conventional confidence-building measures, has conveyed to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry that there is no merit in Pakistan's objections.

Additional data

Mr. Singh provided additional data to the Pakistani officials to substantiate India's viewpoint that it did not violate the treaty. At the same time he told the Foreign Office that India was ready for another round of discussion in a bid to allay Pakistan's apprehensions.

However, indications from the Pakistan Government are that it is in no mood for further round of discussions and would like to invoke the arbitration clause in the treaty and seek a neutral expert from the World Bank to settle the issue.
