UPA members don't get more Central funds for desilting channels: AIADMK

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, DEC. 16. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam today accused the constituent parties of the United Progressive Alliance in the State of not showing interest in getting more funds from the Centre for desilting 11 drainage channels in the city.

Speaking at the council meeting, the AIADMK leader, S.D. Jeyabalan, said that while the Public Works Department had sent a proposal to the Centre to desilt the channels under the National River Conservation Project, the Centre had agreed in principle to desilt only four channels, which drained sewage from the northern parts of the city into the Vaigai. The other five channels on the southern side were not taken into consideration as they did not pollute the Vaigai but only drained water from the river. Mr. Jeyabalan wondered why the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, A. Raja, did not approve the proposal in toto. Amidst objections raised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) member, S. Mahalingam, said the Minister had told the Madurai MP, P. Mohan, that Rs. 8.68 crores allotted for desilting the four channels was only an initial grant and that work on other channels would be taken up during the next fiscal.

Resolutions

The Mayor today ordered the chairmen of different zones to inspect the development works undertaken in their respective zones once a week and submit reports to him.

He also instructed the Commissioner, A. Karthik, to provide them with vehicles for the inspection.

The council today mourned the death of Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi and observed silence for a couple of minutes. The Mayor said that her demise was a loss to the whole world.
