BANGALORE, DEC. 16. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has promised students of diploma in education (D.Ed) course that they will not have to undergo six-month internship henceforth. The internship was introduced in 2000. He also told a delegation of leaders of the All India Democratic Youth Organisation and the Diploma in Education Students' Struggle Committee that he would convene a meeting of officers of the Commissionerate of Public Instruction on December 30 to consider the demand. Earlier, the members of the two organisations staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Commissioner of Public Instruction here demanding the withdrawal of the internship. About 30,000 students pass the diploma course (earlier called Teachers' Training Higher-TCH-course) every year. The protesting students said the Government had extended the duration of the course by six months, from two years to two-and-half years and they were being denied stipend, bus pass and hostel facility during the internship, the Bangalore District AIDYO Committee President, N. Ravi, said. He also noted that the students were also finding it difficult to get jobs after completing the course in the middle of the academic year.
