Meeting the Nobel winner

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, DEC. 16. The Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 2000, Alan MacDairmid, interacted with students of National Public School here on Thursday. He answered their queries about various aspects of chemistry at the informal interaction.

Prof. MacDairmid won the Nobel Prize along with two other scientists, Alan Heeger of the U.S. and Hideki Shirakawa of Japan, for their discovery of the fact that plastic can, after certain modifications, be made electrically conductive.

Addressing about 500 students, Prof. MacDairmid described himself as a mere student and emphasised on hard work. "I believe that the day I stop learning will be the day I start dying. I think I am a lucky man as I can work hard. The harder I work, the luckier I am," he said.

The humble achiever suggested that every knowledge seeker should ask questions, simple or complex. Posing his opinion about lifestyles of scientists, he said, "I would like to say that research workers are as emotional people as a person playing symphony or a poet."
