BANGALORE, DEC. 16. Elections to the eight Standing Committees in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council, scheduled for Thursday, were postponed to December 22 because of lack of quorum. Though the election meeting was to start at 11 a.m., the Mayor, R. Narayanswamy, arrived at the Council Hall at 10.30 a.m. and announced that the meeting was being postponed because of lack of quorum. Later, the Opposition members objected to the Mayor starting the meeting 30 minutes early. "The meeting was to start at 11 a.m. but the Mayor started it early. That's why the attendance was thin," the members said and alleged that this was "a gimmick by the Congress leaders to buy time and strike a deal with the aspirants (to the posts)." The BJP corporator, B.N. Mangala, said it was unfortunate that the Mayor postponed his first Council meeting. "The Congress in the BMP Council is emulating the coalition Government. They kept postponing the Ministry expansion and these people are postponing the standing committee elections. This is the second time that the elections have been put off. If the committees are not formed the BMP administration will come to a standstill," she said and threatened to launch an agitation if the elections were not conducted at the earliest. Sources in the Congress said the elections were put off because all the Congress MLAs were busy with the Ministry expansion process. "The leaders were unable to decide on the members as they were busy," the sources said and added the names would be finalised by December 22.
