Water stagnation a major problem

By Ramesh Susarla

GUNTUR, DEC. 16. One of the large divisions in Guntur Municipal Corporation, the 4th Division is the most planned one with wide main roads and cement concrete internal roads, but lacks underground drainage facility.

Being one of the newly developed areas, only 80 per cent of the plots in Vidyanagar are occupied as on date creating problem for the neighbours at many places, as these were the breeding grounds for mosquitoes with drain water getting accumulated there.

During the past decade the Municipal Commissioners like Praveen Prakash had made efforts, to serve notice to the plot owners to fill the land and make it free of garbage and bushes.

Potholes

During the Telugu Desam regime many of the roads in Chandramouli Nagar, were converted into cement concrete roads under the Janmabhoomi programme with 30 per cent contribution from the residents, but where none came forward, the roads have developed major potholes.

To add to the woes of the people the Water Supply division of the GMC after checking for a leak in the pipeline at the beginning of Chandramouli Nagar 7th lane 2nd cross, has left it open posing a threat to safety of vehicles and children. The corporator of the division expects the municipal corporation to take up at least patch works on all the roads so that they could be protected for some more days.

The frequent change of Municipal Commissioners in the past one year, had proved a bane as some of the works sanctioned by one Commissioner were not given priority by the other, the people point out.

The Lakshmipuram Main Road and the Ring Road pass through the division making traffic flow smooth, but the only identified slum, Sthambalagaruvu, has water stagnation problem, short supply of drinking water and mosquito menace. Street lighting in entire wards needs to be improved with majority of the by-lanes in all localities lacking illumination.

Repair of Navbharat Nagar Library needs attention. Additional hall was also proposed on the library. A division with many amenities and facilities needs proper maintenance from all aspects by properly making use of the employees under GMC Circle Office here.
