VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 16. The Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham has demanded that the Central Government take immediate steps to plug the loopholes in the existing Acts dealing with the sale of seeds besides coming to the rescue of farmers affected by spurious seed.
Seeds Act
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the sangham president, Kolli Nageswara Rao, said that since the bill pertaining to the amendments to the existing seed acts was expected to be taken up in the Parliament during the ongoing winter session, the State Government should take up the matter of providing compensation to the affected farmers with the Centre. Expressing concern over the plight of the farmers who were adversely affected due to spurious seeds, he lamented that the legislations in force were more helpful to the traders rather than farmers. Meanwhile, the members of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) staged a demonstration in front of the Sub-Collector's office this morning in support of their demand that the Government take steps to solve the problems faced by the workers of the unorganised sectors. The members led by the AITUC leader, K. Sekhar Babu, also demanded that the Centre increase the interest on employees Provident Fund to 12 per cent.
