dated December 18, 1954: Police strike in Bengal

Bengal policemen, continuing their hunger-strike, have been warned by the Government of summary dismissal if they refuse to accept the "two-hour command certificates" to be issued to each of them. Troops moving into Howrah early on December 17 arrested a thousand of them and the junior police officers took over constabulary, with wide preparations to continue work without the constables. Following the warning, nearly 70 hunger-strikers gave up their fast and reported for normal duty by the evening. A Government spokesman said, "Everything may be over by mid-day on December 18."
