This Day That Age
The Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai, has invited the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, to come to Peking as soon as he likes to discuss "pertinent questions" on the jailing of 11 American airmen as "spies." Peking Radio broadcast his reply to Mr. Hammarskjoeld's suggestion that he should come to Peking soon after December 26 to discuss not only the Americans but also "all other captured personnel of the UN Command still detained." The 11 American airmen were shot down on June 12, 1953, when they were on a mission for the UN Command. Last month they were sentenced to long terms of imprisonment by the Chinese Supreme Court. The UN General Assembly approved on December 10 a resolution requesting Mr. Hammarskjoeld to "make continuous and unremitting efforts" to obtain the men's release.
