Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article, "Re-engaging organised religion" (Dec. 17), clearly shows that individual leaders of any religion are liable to face criticism and prosecution when they err. The historical examples help show up the Sangh Parivar's campaign that Hindus alone are at the receiving end. The article also rightly emphasises the need to professionalise management of religious institutions.

Sir, The article has dispassionately held the searchlight of reason on important issues clouded by strong emotions triggered by the recent events involving the Kanchi Mutt. Parallels drawn from history have been educative and should illuminate the ongoing debate on the matter.
Manohar Alembath,

Sir, The article is a cool-headed, yet sensitive, appraisal of the situation in which religious organisations function in the political space. While religious leaders are entitled to their political space, certainly the aura of spiritual authority cannot entitle them to a kind of superiority in legal or political matters. Certainly elements exist in the living traditions of the many Indian religions to make reform possible.
Vasantha Surya,

Sir, The excellent article needs to be read by all those who are connected with managing religious establishments.
S. Ramamoorthy,
