TNPL bags national award

CHENNAI, DEC. 17. The Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL), a State Government undertaking, has won the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance for 2004.

This award is given every year to one company in the public sector and two in the private sector.

It was conferred on the TNPL in recognition of its "application of best management practices, compliance of law in true letter and spirit and adherence to ethical standards for effective management and distribution of wealth and discharge of social responsibility for sustainable development of all stakeholders."

A jury of 17 members, headed by B.N. Kirpal, former Chief Justice of India, made the choice. Rameshram Mishra, Chairman and Managing Director, TNPL, received the award from Premchand Gupta, Union Minister of State for Company Affairs, at a function held in New Delhi on December 15.

Speaking at the function, Mr. Mishra said the TNPL would continue its efforts at implementing corporate governance norms in the organisation.

The TNPL has received three other awards during the current year: the Three Leaves Award under the Green Rating project of the Centre for Science and Environment, Delhi; the CII's recognition of the bio-methanation project as "innovative" under its national award for excellence in energy management; and the Special Export Award from Capexil for the sixth consecutive year.
