PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 17. Various environmental organisations in Central Travancore have welcomed the Government decision to constitute an independent Pampa River Development Authority (PRDA) for implementing the Pampa Action Plan (PAP) in a time-bound fashion. In a statement issued here today, the Pampa Parirakshana Samithi (PPS) that has been campaigning for the cause of river Pampa for the past one decade has expressed hope that the Government decision would help in effective co-ordination of various Government departments as well as other agencies involved in the proposed PAP.
Correct step
The PPS general secretary, N. K. Sukumaran Nair, said that the move to set up an independent authority for PAP implementation was a step in the right direction. He called upon the Government to take urgent measures to utilise the Rs. 11 crores allotted by the Union Government for implementing 11 pollution-abatement schemes at Sabarimala and surrounding areas, under the proposed PAP.
Funds lapse
He warned that any delay in utilising the Central fund allocation for the first phase of the PAP would result in the State losing its first ever Centrally-funded river action plan which has been included in the National River Conservation Project. In another statement, the Manimalayar Samrakshana Samithi general secretary, V. N. Gopinatha Pillai, too has welcomed the Government decision to set up the PRDP. According to Mr. Pillai, Manimala being a major tributary of the Pampa, there is the need to contain the pollution problems of Manimala so as to achieve the goal of pollution abatement in the Pampa.
