BELGAUM, DEC. 17. The 17th All India Music and Dance Conference of the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai, will be organised by the Belgaum-based Sangeet Kala Manch here for three days from January 7. During what is billed as a great musical extravaganza, stalwarts from the field of Hindustani classical music such as N. Rajam (violinist), Pandit Ajay Pohankar, Jayashree Patnekar, Padma Talwalkar, Pandit Vidhyadhar Vyas, Devaki Pandit Pandit Ganapati Bhat (all vocalists), Ustad Shahid Parvez (sitar player) and Pandit Raghunath Nakod (tabla) will perform for a special audience consisting chiefly of music critics, connoisseurs, teachers, musicologists and students. In addition, there will be Bharatanatyam by Bhargavi Parasan and Kathak by Kavita Manasee. The president of the mandal, Shyamsunder Sangamkar, said the music concerts would be held in two sessions. There would be seminars in which eminent music scholars would participate. He said local artistes had been given an opportunity to perform. The mandal would confer the title "Mahamahopadhyay'' on eminent musicians in recognition of their contribution to the development and promotion of Indian Classical music. Harmonium player and winner of the T. Chowdiah and Karnataka Sangeet Vidwan awards, Pandit R.K. Bijapure of Belgaum, was one of the musicians selected for the award, he added. The president of Sangeet Kala Manch, Prakash Kulkarni, spoke.
