`Make Kannada relevant to students'

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, DEC. 17. The Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, K. Chidananda Gowda, said here on Friday that felicity in the mother tongue is important to express feelings and sentiments. Knowledge of English is essential to acquire knowledge.

Mr. Chidananda Gowda was inaugurating a two-day workshop on "The new possibilities in Kannada language teaching" organised by Kuvempu University, Kuvempu University College Kannada Teachers' Association, and the Karnataka Sangh.

The teaching of Kannada has been found to be listless. The teaching of the language should be modernised to make it relevant. New and innovative methods are needed in teaching the language.

H.T. Krishnamurthy, association secretary, delivered the keynote address. Pandurang Udupa, sangha president, and N.S. Thimme Gowda, association president, were present.

Many linguists, writers and theatre persons are resource persons for the workshop, which is being attended by around 100 Kannada teachers.
