Ponnala convenes meet on RDS issue

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL, DEC. 17. The Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah, held a meeting with Ministers in-charge of Kurnool and Mahabubnagar respectively -- Konathala Ramakrishna and G. Vinod -- MLAs, Collectors and irrigation officials in Hyderabad on Friday to resolve the dispute over closure of vents at RDS anicut and Sunkesula barrage.

The meeting did not cut much ice as both sides stuck to their guns. Leaders from Mahabubnagar argued that they were willing to close the vent in the Sunkesula barrage if sluices at RDS anicut were also closed.

Farmers from Kosigi, who had lift irrigation schemes below RDS, did not want the sluices closed to enable the RDS canal draw more water.

The MLA from Yemmiganur, Channakesava Reddy, opposed closure of vents at RDS saying that it was detrimental to the interests of farmers of Kosigi.

At Sunkesula, farmers of Alampuram constituency opposed closure of the vent on the ground that it would cause water shortage to the lift irrigation schemes, which irrigated some 5,000 acres along the Tungabhadra course.

The Minister asked MLAs from both the districts to inspect the sites and suggest a practicable solution.
