Irina wins title

MUMBAI, DEC. 17. Irina Brar kept her date with glory, coming up with a birdie on the 19th hole playoff, edging out Parneeta Grewal for the title in the WIGA-sponsored Western India ladies golf championships at the par-70 BPGC course on Friday. The two were deadlocked at 293 on the concluding day, forcing both the Chandigarh golfers to return to the greens again.

The 21-year-old India No. 1 from Chandigarh expressed relief at the victory, though credit is due for her composure under extreme pressure on the 19th hole (par five).

"I have never played a final which went this close," said Irina, returning to competition after a layoff due to an injured back. "I am not allowed to practise, so could not prepare for this event. Tournament play is the only training I get, so winning a playoff makes it worthwhile."

Delhi's 12-year-old golf prodigy Laverry Kumar won the silver category (handicap 13-24) with 344; Asha Shah won the bronze category (handicap 25-36) with 396.

The four-day event was co-sponsored by Tiger Sports Marketing, AMI India and HI-Tos Liner.
