Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 17. The Development Commissioner of Pondicherry, B.V. Selvaraj, has stressed that tourism should not be promoted at the expense of the culture and traditions of the country. Tourism should be `development compliant' and should not deviate from the traditions, he said at a seminar on the `International Day of Sex Workers United Against Violence' here today. The seminar was organised by the Pondicherry-based non-governmental organisation, Society of Development, Research and Training (SFDRT). Mr. Selvaraj, who is also the Education Secretary, said the administration had constituted an apex committee under the Chief Secretary to monitor implementation of the Prevention of Immoral Traffic Act. The committee had decided to set up advisory panels to monitor implementation of the Act in the Union Territory. Officials of other departments including Women and Child Development and also Social Welfare are included in the apex body.
He praised the work done by SFDRT in creating awareness about AIDS and the bridge school concept adopted by it to provide education to the children of sex workers. The SFDRT executive director, Shyamala Ashok, welcomed those present at the seminar. Representatives of non-governmental organisations participated in the deliberations.
