Jana puts onus on naxals

By Our Staff Reporter

NALGONDA, DEC.17. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, has said the State Government will decide dates for the second round of peace talks without any delay, if the `naxalites too create a conducive atmosphere' by maintaining restraint.

Exhorting that the Government was not intending to take up tough measures against naxalites, Mr. Jana Reddy told presspersons here on Friday that "we (the Government) will announce dates the moment they create a conducive atmosphere.''

Listing the incidents of violence involving naxals in the last one and half months, including the landmine blast triggered in Vizag agency on December 15, he made it clear that maintaining law and order was the duty of the Government. He said the Government had brought to the notice of the monitoring committee the violence unleashed by naxals.

Earlier addressing a meeting organised by the Citizens' Forum for Democracy, he called upon intellectuals, reformists and people to "control both sides'' to create peaceful atmosphere.

Advising naxals to stop armed struggle for some time, the Home Minister said: "The Maoists could create some impact on society, but they could not emancipate the masses and also could not render justice for them. Hence they must mingle with society and work for the people.''

The Home Minister advised all political parties, reformists and the Maoists to adopt one mandal each to implement their ideologies they believe in.

"Let them do some constructive work in their respective areas for one full year and then we can take stock of the situation to ascertain which ideology is the best,'' he said and later clarified to the media that it was his personal viewpoint.
