Bags medals in skating contest

TIRUPATI: J. Vindhya, a class 10 student of Geethanjali English Medium High School, Tirupati won two silver medals at the State-level skating championship conducted by the Roller Skating Association of Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam recently. She won the medals in the road race and rink race categories. She also won a bronze medal at a meet organised by State School Games Federation at Kakinada last month.

Rights panel reviews cases

TIRUPATI: Justice N. Subba Raju, Member, Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission, has said 20 cases have been referred to the panel from Chittoor district and said it would take suo motu notice of even media reports on human rights violation, lock-up deaths and so on. He was reviewing the progress of investigation in cases relating to human rights, police highhandedness, custodial deaths etc., here on Friday. The Additional SP, Chittoor, Narasinga Rao, was also present.

Awareness camp

TIRUPATI: An awareness camp was conducted on the premises of David Rees Leprosy Hospital at Yerpedu near here on HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. The hospital's director, Emrys I. Rees, the deputy directors, Stevenson and Usha Rees, spoke on the occasion.

Pensioners' Day

ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur District Pensioners' Association observed Pensioners' Day on Friday. The association president, G. Sundara Rajaiah, explained that the day of Supreme Court judgment (December 17, 1982) over pensionary benefits to the Central Government employees retired before April 1, 1979 was being observed as Pensioners' Day.

Meet on energy conservation

KURNOOL: The CPDCL and NEDCAP conducted a workshop jointly on energy conservation here on Friday. The SE, P. Ramulu, said if 30-lakh households saved one unit per day, the savings in terms of money would be around Rs. 90 crores. Use of power saving lamps would drastically bring down power consumption. He also stressed the need for using ISI-marked motors and capacitors for agriculture purpose, which would save power. The NEDCAP Manager, Ramakrishna, and others were present.

Deve Gowda at Ahobilam

KURNOOL: The former Prime Minister, H. D. Deve Gowda, took part in the Sudarshana Yagnam at Ahobilam in Kurnool district on Friday. He would stay at the temple for five days.

Heavy security was arranged at the temple and strangers were screened before being allowed into the temple. The Mutt head, Narayana Yatindra, officiated the `yagnam'.

Selection of beneficiaries

NELLORE: Interviews for selecting beneficiaries of Rajiv Yuva Shakti scheme in Varikuntapadu mandal of the district will be held on December 22. Meanwhile, interviews pertaining to Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) will be held in Varikuntapadu, Udayagiri, Duttaluru and Seetaramapuram mandals on December 30.

Protest by RTC workers

NELLORE: The Insurance Employees Union of Nellore division has expressed solidarity with the agitating RTC employees, who have been demanding what has been described `protection' to the corporation.

The union regretted the lukewarm attitude of the Government to the problems of workers and blamed the Government policies for the losses incurred by the RTC. Meanwhile, the RTC workers at Kavali took out a big rally in support of their demands.

Tribal bodies hold meeting

ADILABAD: Twentyseven tribal organisations on Friday organised a meeting at Tiryani mandal headquarters to voice opposition to the Communist Party of India (Maoist) alleged discriminatory attitude towards tribals and downtrodden sections among naxalite cadre.

The meeting was organised in the backdrop of the surrender of a Gond tribal and Adilabad district committee secretary of the CPI(Maoist), Tekam Motiram alias Vijay, recently. He had alleged discrimination on the part of the naxalite outfit.

The Bellampalli Additional SP, M. Stephen Raveendra, exhorted tribals who were operating as naxalites to surrender.

ISO certificate for college

NIZAMABAD: The Kshatriya College of Engineering, Chepur, has been accredited with ISO 9001:2000 certificate by the American National Accreditation Programme for Registrars of Quality Systems. In a press release issued here on Friday, the college Principal, M. Venkateswarlu, said ISO 9001:2000 was a prestigious certificate.

ENT workshop today

WARANGAL: The Association of Otolaryngologists of India, Warangal branch, is organising an ENT workshop on December 18 at MGM Hospital.

According to organising secretary, P. Sambasiva Rao, about 200 ENT specialists are expected to attend the workshop.

Auto driver dies in mishap

Sangareddy: Yadaiah (25), driver of an autorickshaw, died on the spot when the vehicle he was driving hit a road-divider in Zaheerabad town on Friday morning. Raju (20), a passenger, received severe head injuries. He has been shifted to NIMS in Hyderabad.

Six stolen vehicles recovered

Patancheru: Two youngsters who allegedly stole six two-wheelers in and around the city were nabbed by the Patancheru police on Friday when they were trying to sell one of the vehicles.

The accused persons -- P. Rajeswar Reddy (19) of Marpalli village of Ranga Reddy and

B. Mallesh (20) of Ramachandrapur mandal of Medak district -- were former convicts.

APERC public hearings

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) will hold public hearings in Hyderabad, Warangal, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati from January 31 to February 8 to determine the tariff for 2005-06, according to a press release issued by the Secretary of the Commission.

The tentative schedule is: APTransco, January 31, CPDCL, common issues of Discoms, February 1 (Hyderabad), NPDCL, February 3 (Warangal), EPDCL, February 5 (Visakhapatnam) and SPDCL, February 8 (Tirupati).

Award for NIN official

HYDERABAD: A senior research officer of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), D. Raghunatha Rao, received the award for best oral presentation at a conference held recently in Mumbai on `Health and nutrition: a biotechnological approach'. It was organised at B.N. Bandodkar College of Science, Thane.

Dr. Rao's paper - Nutrition knowledge and dietary habits of school-going adolescent girls in Hyderabad - analysed the efficacy of various methods of communication in imparting nutrition education, a press release said on Friday.

Bags `India CFO Award'

HYDERABAD: The Director (Finance), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), P. Narasimharamulu, bagged the `India CFO Award-2004' for achieving excellence in finance in a public sector undertaking. He received the award from G.N. Bajpai, Chairman, Security and Exchange Board of India, in Mumbai, recently.

The award was instituted by the International Market Assessment India, a press release issued by the NTPC said.

Record FP operations

KARIMNAGAR: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Ramagundam, has set a record in family planning operations it has been conducting since 1982 by organising mega camps at its hospital. It has conducted 19 sterilisation camps till date and performed 52,341 operations to eligible couples.

The 20th camp was inaugurated on Friday. It would continue till December 23. It was targeted to perform 3,000 sterilisations during the camp.

Plea to scrap GO 374

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors' Association on Friday called for scrapping of the GO 374, which, it said, was acting as a deterrent for doctors to join Government service.

Chandra Sekhar Reddy, general secretary of the association, in a statement, however, welcomed the GO appointing a high-power committee to finalise the modalities of cadre separation and fix guidelines on splitting the teaching and non-teaching cadre. Dr. Reddy also hailed the Government's decision to recruit 1,000 doctors.

Bail for stamp scam accused

HYDERABAD: The former DCP, Narasimha Rao, who was an accused in the fake stamp paper case, was granted bail by the State High Court on Friday.

Justice A. Gopala Reddy, who heard the petition filed by Narasimha Rao, perused the contentions of both the sides and granted bail.

It may be recalled that the senior officer was charged with ordering the release of amounts frozen during the investigation into the scam allegedly for a consideration.

Maoists appoint new commanders

VISAKHAPATNAM: New commanders have been appointed for the divisional and area committees and Local Guerrilla Squads (LGS) of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) in its Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zone, according to information available.

While Sudhakar and Diwakar continue as secretary and official representative respectively of the AOB Special Zonal Committee, Dayanand, Jogal and Lenju alias Jagadish are the new secretaries of the divisional committees of Srikakulam, Malkangiri and east division respectively. A new secretary is yet to be appointed for the newly formed Vamsadhara Divisional Committee. It is also believed that the Maoists are planning to create more divisional committees for East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.

Case against naxals

ADILABAD: A case for bid to extort money from a contractor was registered at the Dahegaon police station against the Communist Party of India (Maoist) district committee member, Mylarapu Adellu alias Bhaskar, the Sirpur area committee member, Padmakka, and four others on Thursday. According to the police, these armed naxalites had allegedly threatened to kill a contractor, Ranga Rao, on December 2 at Karji village in Dahegaon mandal.

Paritala to appear in court

ANANTAPUR: The Telugu Desam legislator from Penukonda, Paritala Ravindra, is likely to appear in court at Pulivendula on December 23 in a defamation case filed by Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a few months ago.

Mr. Ravindra, during the series of killings of party leaders and activists a few months ago, had reportedly alleged that Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy was helping the culprits following which the latter had filed a case.

Varsity status likely for rural institute

HYDERABAD: The State Government is likely to upgrade into a university Swamy Ramananda Tirtha Rural Institute (SRTRI) located at Jalapur village in Nalgonda district.

This was indicated here on Friday by the Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, while inaugurating a seminar organised by the institute on `Renewable energy technologies'.

The seminar resolved that solar energy provided an answer to bridge the gap between demand and supply and ease the burden on electricity and fossil fuel in view of the energy crisis.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering, M.N. Reddy, Chairman, SRTRI, stated that a training programme for rural youth on renewable energy would be started by this month-end with financial assistance of the UN Industrial Development Organisation through the Youth Employment Summit (YES). He said that SRTRI would establish a modern laboratory on its Bhoodan Pochampally campus for the training.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Medak and Ramagundam recorded the lowest night temperature of 12 degree Celsius on Friday. Dry weather prevailed in the State, with minimum temperatures remaining unchanged. The forecast for Saturday was that dry weather would continue.
