Governor inaugurates Gita conference

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, DEC. 17. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has said that the Bhagawad Gita, over the centuries, has played multiple roles in the religious, spiritual, philosophical, social and political areas and has universal implications.

He was speaking after inaugurating the second Global Gita Conference organised by the International Gita Foundation Trust and Sri Avadhoota Datta Peetham in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here on Friday. He also released a book on the Gita, Gita Parichayam.

Mr. Chaturvedi said that the Gita has been translated in 132 languages owing to its universal appeal. With the increasing number of commentaries on the Gita, the perennial interest in the religious text continued, he added.

He also said that almost all the leaders of the Indian freedom struggle used the Gita as a medium. "Raja Ram Mohun Roy used it for social reforms, Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna institutionalised it for spiritual reforms. Bal Gangadhar Tilak used it for building self-confidence, Mahatma Gandhi used it as a tool to achieve truth and ahimsa, Aurobindo and Bankimchandra Chatterjee used it for social uplift," he said.

Referring to the first translation of the Gita, Mr. Chaturvedi said that Charles Wilkins translated the text into English in 1785 at the instance of the then Governor General, Warren Hastings. "When Hastings recommended to the East India Company that the Gita should be translated, he had a sound knowledge of Sanskrit and the great message it sent to humanity. However, such an appreciation from Hastings was not taken kindly by the British," he added.

The Governor said that when a French translation of the Gita was published, other countries of the West took keen interest in the study and understanding of the text.

The junior pontiff of Sri Avadhoota Datta Peeta, Datta Vijayananda Tirtha, released Ashtothram and Gems of Bhagawad Gita.

The chairman of the conference, P.V. Nath; the seer of Sri Avadhoota Datta Peeta, Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamy; the chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Karnataka, N. Ramanuja; and the Karnataka High Court judge Manjula Chellur were present on the occasion.

Over 600 scholars, researchers, and preachers from all over the world are participating in the conference.
