BIDAR, DEC. 17. Tenaion prevailed in Bemalkheda in Humnabad taluk on Friday after a man, who was allegedly drunk, was accuses of defiling a statue of Basaveshwara in the village. According to the police, Siddappa, who is on bail after being accused of two murders and is said to be an alcoholic, urinated on the steps in front of the statue. He also allegedly used abusive language against the 12th Century philosopher. A group of traders who tried to stop him chased him and beat him up. An hour later, he returned with his friends and tried to attack the traders. They called the police and Siddappa was arrested. The Akhil Bharatiya Veerashaiva Yuva Okkoota observed a bandh. Protesters sat in dharna in front of the statue and shouted slogan against the Government for failing to protect the interests of Veerashaivas. A "shuddhi" ritual to cleanse the statue has been scheduled for Saturday. Two cases have been booked at the Bemalkheda Police Station.
