Shekhawat shares Somnath's anguish
By Javed M. Ansari
NEW DELHI,
DEC. 17.
The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, has lent his support to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, for upholding the dignity and prestige of the House. Mr. Shekhawat reportedly told Mr. Chatterjee that he understood his feelings and was also with him in wanting to resign as the presiding officer of the House.
Both have been working together to ensure that Parliament functions smoothly. Last month, both convened an all-party meeting to try and evolve a consensus on the smooth functioning of Parliament.
This morning after the unveiling of Durga Malla's statue in the Parliament House, Mr. Shekhawat, reportedly took Mr. Chatterjee aside and spent a couple of minutes with him.
Mr. Shekhawat reportedly told him that he shared his anguish and the views expressed by him in his statement yesterday. He also told Mr. Chatterjee that if he decided to resign, all that he had to do was to give him a ten- minute notice and he would follow suit.
