BANGALORE, DEC. 17. The city police have solved 38 cases of vehicle theft, including some reported from other States, and recovered vehicles worth Rs. 80 lakhs by arresting four persons.

The Commissioner of Police, S. Mariswamy, on Friday told presspersons that a team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Madivala Sub-division), N. Nagaraj, arrested three persons of an inter-State gang and recovered five Toyota Qualis vans, a Mitshubishi Lancer car, and two Maruti cars, together worth Rs. 65 lakhs.

The arrested persons had allegedly stolen the vehicles from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. The names of the arrested persons were given as Mohammed Koya alias Nageshwar Rao (40) of Kerala, J. Nagaraju Shetty (49) of Andhra Pradesh, and S. Ramesh Kumar Moopanar (35) of Tamil Nadu. The police are on the lookout for some of the accused who are at large.

In another case, the Basavanagudi police recovered 28 motorcycles by arresting Chandrashekar alias Chandra (51) of 8th Main, Hanumanthanagar.

Mr. Mariswamy said that using a fake master key, Chandrashekar had stolen 28 Hero Honda Splendor motorcycles from Basavanagudi, Central, Hanumanthanagar, Victoria Hospital, Shankarapuram, and Thyagarajanagar police station limits.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Jayanagar Sub-division), Munivenkatappa, who led the team that arrested the accused, said Chandrashekar had stolen most of the vehicles from parking lots.

When parking lot attendants or the vehicle owners caught Chandrashekar while stealing the vehicles, he used to claim that he was a seizing officer of a vehicle finance company, Mr. Munivenkatappa said.

He used to tell the vehicle owners that he had tried to take away their vehicles by mistake as he had not read the registration number correctly.

Chandrashekar used to sell the stolen vehicles in Mysore, Chamarajanagar and other places by telling people that he had purchased them in auctions held by vehicle finance firms in Bangalore, Mr. Munivenkatappa said.

The police worked on a clue for two months to catch Chandrashekar, who had been arrested in 1998 by the Subramanyanagar police for allegedly stealing three motorcycles.

Mr. Mariswamy said that in accordance with a Supreme Court judgment, finance companies need not seek police permission to seize vehicles of the defaulters.

The Police Commissioner announced cash rewards for the two teams that arrested the accused.
