CMO sent to police remand

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 17. The chief medical officer of the South Delhi district, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a doctor in lieu of not implicating him for carrying out pre-natal diagnostic tests (PNDT) on Thursday, was today remanded to four-day police custody.

In its application for the police remand, the CBI told the court that the accused, R.R. Kishore, had issued four show cause notices to Kulbir Handa, who runs a diagnostic clinic in Defence Colony, between June and November and threatened to cancel his registration and implicate him in the PNDT Act (invoked for allowing sex-determination tests). He demanded Rs. 80,000 from the complainant in lieu of getting him a clearance from the review committee.

Earlier, Mr. Handa had complained to the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI about Dr. Kishore, an officer on deputation from the Union Health Ministry, about his demands. A trap was laid at Kidwai Nagar house of the officer on Thursday evening. Dr. Kishore was arrested when he allegedly accepted the first instalment of the bribe, Rs. 35,000, from Mr. Handa.

Subsequent search of the residence of the accused led to the recovery of movable and immovable property, worth over a crore. The CBI said they found Rs.3.82 lakhs in cash, fixed deposits in various Banks worth Rs.21.3 lakhs; investments in National Savings Certificates, Kisan Vikas Patra, Indira Vikas Patra and other documents worth Rs. 13 lakhs; investments in various schemes of UTI worth Rs.40 lakhs; post office deposits amounting to Rs. 23 lakhs and deposits in Public Provident Fund worth Rs.11 lakhs during the search.
