CHIKMAGALUR, DEC. 18. Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Sangh Parivar staged a dharna in front of the district offices here on Friday to protest against the administration's decision to impose restrictions on the Datta Jayanti celebrations scheduled to be held from December 24 to 26. Urging the administration to allow the Sangh Parivar to peacefully conduct Shoba Yatra and Datta Jayanti, the protesters refrained from shouting slogans and sang bhajans instead. C.H. Lokesh, general secretary of the district unit of the BJP, said that the administration has not given permission for the Shoba Yatra so far and had cancelled the microphone licence for the rath yatras converging on Chikmagalur from various places. Alleging that municipal workers were tearing down flags and banners hoisted by the Sangh Parivar, Mr. Lokesh said that the district administration is obstructing religious practices and hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus. Members of the Sangh Parivar simultaneously staged dharnas in front of the taluk offices in Mudigere, Kadur and Tarikere. A procession was taken out in Tarikere. Five persons, including D.N. Jeevaraj, MLA, and Mahendra Kumar, convener of the State unit of the Bajrang Dal, courted arrest in Koppa for speaking on a microphone fitted to a rath. The Datta Chaitanya Rath Yatra entered Koppa town in the evening, and police who were following the vehicle confiscated the microphone and stopped the rath yatra as soon as Mr. Jeevaraj began his speech. Koppa town observed a bandh to protest against the incident. Police caned members of the Sangh Parivar who staged a protest against the incident.
