MOSCOW: Russia's Parliament on Friday approved a new anti-terror law that provides for tighter security measures to forestall terrorist attacks. The bill, approved in first reading by 385 votes to 47, gives authorities the right to impose a 60-day "state of terrorist danger" in any part of the country if it faces the threat of a terror strike. It was drawn up in the wake of the deadly Beslan school hostage crisis in September in which more than 340 persons were killed. The emergency security measures listed in the bill include banning of public demonstrations, tapping of telephones, and restricting movements of people and traffic. The bill also allows curbs on press activity, such as blocking the shooting of graphic scenes of violence and restricting journalists' reporting at the scene of terror attacks.
