Demonstration of DTH technology

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, DEC. 18. With smiles writ large on their faces, hundreds of Tiruchi residents witnessed a new wave of technology as a handful of technocrats from Doordarshan gave a demonstration of the free Direct-to-Home (DTH) technology here today.

Giving expression to their satisfaction over the clarity in the digital visual signals, the viewers raised several questions about transponders, polarisation and frequency.

Using a small dish and digital receiver, the DD personnel explained the application of the equipment for receiving 33 popular television channels, including 19 DD and 14 private channels in addition to 12 frequency modulation radio channels.

Some of the DD channels that would be made available through the equipment are DD-1 National, DD-News, DD-Podhigai, DD-Sports, DD-Lok Sabha and DD-Rajya Sabha. Private channels include Star Utsav, Aaj Tak, Sun TV, Kairali and ETC Marathi.

Addressing mediapersons later, A. Rajagopal, Superintending Engineer, All India Radio, Tiruchi, DTH, said the installation of the DTH receive equipment, which was available in the local market, involved a simple procedure.

Excellent digital signal quality and receipt of signals even in the remotest part of the country were some of its advantages. He said NSS-6 (95 degree East) was the satellite used.

The equipment, which involved a one-time investment of Rs.3,500, would relieve viewers of the monthly subscription to cable operators.

A. Anandan, Station Engineer, the AIR, Tiruchi, said that at a given time, one could either watch a television channel or listen to an FM channel.

The president of the Tiruchi District Chamber of Commerce, J.J.L. Gnanaraj, inaugurated the DTH.
