Humanitarian gesture

CUDDAPAH: The Megastar Chiranjeevi Welfare Youth Society organised bread and fruits distribution to patients in Cuddapah Government hospital on Saturday. The Cuddapah DSP, M. Ramaprasada Rao, the BC United Front leader, B. Obulapathi, and the Youth Minority leader, S. Arifullah, gave away the bread and fruits to patients. Houses burgled Nellore: Two incidents of house burgling were reported in Venkateswarapuram area of Nellore town on Friday. The offenders took away ornaments, cash and a motorcycle.

Eye camp

Nellore: A free eye camp will be held at Kommi village of Kondapuram mandal, on Sunday under the auspices of Lok Satta. Barn gutted Nellore: A tobacco barn was gutted in Jirravari Palem village of Kaligiri mandal, on Friday. According to reports the mishap occured during curing time, causing a loss of Rs. 50,000. Fire tenders from Vinjamoor managed to control the fire.

Besieged

Nellore: Irate farmers laid siege to the sub-station of Dagadarthi, complaining about erratic supply of power. They said the undependable supply has resulted in drying up of the crops and numerous complaints to the authorities had not met with a favourable response.

Police raids

Nellore: In continuation of their raids, the police in Nellore, have rounded up two persons allegedly indulging in single number lottery at Atmakur bus station on Saturday and recovered Rs. 1,600 from them.

CPI(M) meet

NELLORE: The 19th district-level conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will be held at Nellore for three days from December 20. Three hundred representatives are expected to participate in the conference, which is to be held at the Parameswari Kalyanamandapam on the mini-bypass road.

State moves to improve RTC finances

HYDERABAD: The Government on Saturday announced several measures to improve the finances of the State Road Transport Corporation (RTC), including sanction of 50 per cent reimbursement on concessions extended to various sections of commuters. The amount is Rs.167 crores, as against Rs.100 crores in the current year.

The measures were decided at a review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, following the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's instructions.

According to an official release, the Government will extend Rs.125 crores as financial assistance to RTC in view of the diesel price hike. A high-level committee is being constituted to recommend improvements in the finances of the corporation on a sustainable basis.

BC delegation calls on

Prime Minister

HYDERABAD: A delegation of Backward Classes Welfare Association, led by the Union Labour Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, and the Union Minister of State for Rural Development, A. Narendra, called on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in Delhi on Saturday to submit its demands.

The association, among others, demanded a Ministry for BCs at the Centre, a Constitutionally constituted BC Commission at the national-level, 50 per cent political reservation for BCs and reservations in promotions.

Mr. Singh promised the team to consider allocating a Ministry for BCs, a press release here by the association president, R. Krishnaiah, said.

CTO in ACB net

GUNTUR: Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths on Saturday raided the house of the Commercial Taxes Officer, Nidadavolu, Panem Nageswara Rao, at Guntur along with that of his relative and confiscated moveable and immovable properties worth Rs. 45 lakhs.

The ACB Deputy Superintendent of Police, C. Uday Kumar, the investigating Inspector, Vijay Kumar, and other staff raided the houses this morning and arrested Nageswara Rao for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

HC upholds conviction of two policemen

HYDERABAD: The High Court has confirmed the conviction awarded to two policemen by trial courts in two corruption cases. The 18-month rigorous imprisonment awarded to V. Raghu Dhuli, formerly Sub-Inspector of the Railway Police, Eluru, and the three-year rigorous imprisonment to G. Yadagiri Reddy, former constable of the Rampachodavaram police station, were confirmed by the High Court, according to a press release.

Held with fake passport

HYDERABAD: A native of Korutla in Karimnagar district, I. Laxmi Narsaiah, was arrested on the charge of attempting to fly to Dubai claiming the passport of another person as his own at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Friday.

The immigration authorities grew suspicious, as Narsaiah's photo did not match with that of the passport which was in the name of M. Anjaneyulu.

When questioned, he confessed to officials that he was not Anjaneyulu but Narsaiah. He told the police that his employer in UAE retained his original passport when he went there in 2001. He returned to India recently and approached an agent, K. Ravi of Jagityal to secure a passport to go to Dubai again.

Police attempts suicide

KURNOOL: A head constable, identified as Shukur, attempted suicide by consuming poison on Saturday. Mr. Shukur, who was attached to the Pathikonda police station, was admitted to the General Hospital here.

It is learnt the constable was hurt by the attitude of higher authorities while the police maintained that domestic problems were the reason for the extreme step.

Three naxals surrender

WARANGAL: Three members of the CPI (Maoist) surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, K. Srinivasa Reddy, here today. Among them was a girl -- N. Chandrakala (13) alias Rajitha, of Nagaram in Bhupalpally mandal.

Chandrakala was reportedly lured by a Maoist leader, Jilani Begum, when she complained of harassment by her brother-in-law. The Maoist leaders promised to sort out the issue and asked her to join them. However, they failed to address her problem and moreover, the girl was made to carry their baggage for miles. Vexed with the drudgery and their indifferent attitude, she surrendered before the police.

Probe into AU affairs: hearing on December 29

HYDERABAD: Vaman Rao, a retired judge of the High Court, who has been appointed enquiry authority to look into allegations pertaining to the academic and administrative affairs of Andhra University, will hold a preliminary hearing on December 29. In a press release issued here on Saturday, Justice Rao said the meeting hall of Visakhapatnam Collectorate would be the venue. All those who had sent representations/complaints to the Government can appear before the judge from 2 p.m. onwards.

Two electrocuted

KARIMNAGAR: Two persons were electrocuted when they were trying to remove a pipe from a motor at a water service centre in Vemulawada temple town on Saturday.

The police identified the victims as Ch. Mahesh (16) and U. Srinivas (22).

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Dry weather continued in the State on Saturday. The minimum temperature changed a little in the State.

The lowest night temperature for the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded by Medak and Ramagundam at 11 degree Celsius.
