PONDICHERRY, DEC. 18. The State Planning Board has sought Rs. 1,100 crores from the Centre for the next financial year (2005-2006). The approved plan outlay for the current year (2004-2005) is Rs. 615 crores. At a meeting presided over by the Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, M.M. Lakhera, a detailed discussion on various proposals under the annual plan was held. The proposals would be sent to the Planning Commission, said a release from the Director of Planning and Research Department, M. Sreedharan. The increased outlay has been sought to fund infrastructure projects such as starting of the special economic zone, besides development of a port, airport and the Tirunallar temple town near Karaikal. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, V. Narayanasamy and M. Ramadass, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman, and the independent member from Yanam, Malladi Krishna Rao, spoke at the meeting. The meeting counselled the official machinery to focus on creating jobs and employment opportunities.
