UPSC applications
ERODE DEC. 18 . The application forms for Union Public Service Commission examinations could be obtained from post offices in the district, the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Erode, P. Nallathambi, has said. The forms could be purchased at Rs. 20 on all working days at the head post offices in Erode, Bhavani and Gobichettipalayam, and at sub-post offices in Perundurai, Sathyamangalam and Kangeyam.
Hundis broken
MECHERI DEC. 18 . The hundis of the Mallikarjunar Temple at Koil Vellar village near here were found broken on Friday. The police said that the theft came to light when the locks in the door of the temple were found broken. One of the hundis was found in the nearby stream.
Eye camp
ERODE DEC. 18 . A free eye camp was conducted by the Erode District Retired Officials Association and Arasan Eye Hospital here on Friday. The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, inaugurated the camp. As many as 40 retired officials gave consent letters to Arasan Eye Hospital for donating their eyes. The president of the association, S. Arumugam, presided
Sanction
ERODE DEC. 1 8. The Government has sanctioned Rs. 19.67 lakhs for purchasing three hectares at Odanilai in Erode taluk to construct a mani mandapam for freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, has said. In a press release here on Friday, the Collector said that the land was negotiated by the revenue officials at Rs. 15.07 lakhs. Further, Rs. 4.60 lakhs would be given as compensation for the standing coconut trees. The sanction came in the wake of these details sent to the Government through the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C. Ramasamy.
Arrack seized
Krishnagiri Dec. 18 . The Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel seized 1,800 litres of illicit arrack in Hosur on Friday. According to the police, a team was checking vehicles on the Hosur-Krishnagiri Road when they intercepted a lorry and seized the arrack. Two persons were arrested.
Cyclist killed
TUTICORIN DEC.18. A 37-year-old man was killed after a Maruti van dashed against the cycle he was riding at Kayatar near here today. The police said Ramaswamy suffered serious injuries and died on the spot. The driver of the van was later arrested.
Assumes office
TIRUNELVELI DEC. 18. M.P. Varghese assumed office as Regional Provident Fund Commissioner on December 16 at the Sub-Regional Office, Employee's Provident Fund Organisation here. According to the Assistant PF Commissioner, C.A. Mathews, Mr. Varghese would be in charge of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts.
8 sentenced
to life term
TUTICORIN DEC. 18. Fast Track Court-1 Judge Bhoopalan on Friday sentenced eight persons to life imprisonment for murdering one Rajagopal at Thamankulam on Nov 11, 2000. The eight were Jebamalai, Chandran, Rajendran, Jeevarathinam, Jeyakodi, Ramesh, Bharathan and Soundararajan. Alwarthirunageri police investigated the case.
Two prisoners escape
CUDDALORE DEC. 18. Two remand prisoners escaped from the central prison here in the early hours today. Both were nabbed within two hours. Prison authorities said K. Velmurugan of Panruti and V.Pandian of Nagapattinam, said to have been involved in theft cases, bent the iron bars of the cell with blankets and came out at 2.45 a.m. Then they climbed over the pipeline attached to the 15-feet-high compound and jumped out. While Velmurugan escaped, Pandian suffered leg injuries, and he was later found in a nearby farm, writhing in pain. The authorities lodged a complaint with the Old Town police. Velmurugan was traced at Panruti. The Deputy Inspector General of Prison, Kumaraswamy, came from Tiruchi to inspect the security arrangements at the prison. The Jail Superintendent, K. Thiagarajan, placed the head warder, Munusamy, and two warders, Babu Sahi and Aiyanar, under suspension.
Five dacoits nabbed
RAMANATHAPURAM DEC. 18 . Within 12 hours of two dacoities at Kilakarai near here, the police on Friday arrested five of a gang of six, including two dismissed policemen. Sources said the gang waylaid Syed Hassan of Kilakarai, who was waiting for bus at Kilakarai and snatched Rs.69, 000 in cash by brandishing a knife. Fifteen minutes later, it waylaid K. Sivakumar, a jewellery merchant of Keezha Santhaipettai in Madurai, at another bus stop at Kilakarai morning and snatched away 10 kg of silver ornaments. On suspicion, the police arrested Nagarajan (36) of Chathirakudi, a dismissed constable of the Central Reserve Police Force and later four other members. D. Dhandapani, a head constable of the Armed Reserve Police, was the other member. The police also seized Rs.69,000, the silver ornaments, a knife and three cell phones.
Gauge conversion
THANJAVUR DEC. 18 . Gauge conversion between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur is likely to be completed by March next, M. Swayambulingam, Chief Engineer, Southern Railways, said today. Talking to presspersons here after inspecting the work, he said the conversion of the 55-km stretch began in July this year, at a cost of Rs. 65 crores. There were 10 big bridges and 146 small bridges in the stretch, and the work on the big bridges was going on in full swing. Mr. Swayambulingam saw the work on the bridge across the Grand Anaicut Canal near the Thanjavur station.
Two drowned
THANJAVUR DEC. 18 . The bodies of the two youths, who were drowned in the Vadavar on Friday, were recovered today. Suresh (29) and Satheesh (27) were brothers of Ramesh (31), son of Govindaraj of Manambuchavadi, who died yesterday. After the cremation of Ramesh, they went to Vadavar with their father to take bath. They were drowned. The bodies were cremated this afternoon.
Advocates to meet Chief Justice
ERODE DEC. 18. The Federation for District and Subordinate Courts Bar Associations of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry has decided to meet the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Markandey Katju, and request him to take steps to dispose of the long-pending cases in the High Court. The resolution was adopted at the annual general body meeting held here today. The meeting re-elected E.V. Viswanathan as chairman, P. Thirumalairajan as secretary and K. Kandasamy as treasurer. Fifteen vice-chairmen and 18 joint secretaries were also elected.
Accountants extend support
CHENNAI DEC. 18. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will extend support to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) in the launch of an Information System Audit Course. Establishing and operating a peer review mechanism, preparation of study material in tune with the revised curriculum, supply of faculty and orientation of trainers are the areas in which the ICAI will cooperate with ICAN. These figure in the action plan drawn up recently for implementation of a memorandum of understanding between the two institutes. The institutes have also decided to undertake research. An international conference to mark the ICAN foundation day would be organised by the two bodies in January in Nepal, according to a release.
Held for killing mother-in-law
COIMBATORE DEC. 18. The Singanallur police have arrested Mahendran, an employee in a workshop on charges of having beaten his mother-in-law Ramathal (50) to death with an iron rod this morning. Mahendran had reportedly picked up a wordy duel with his wife, Sumathy, last evening in an inebriated condition and asked his wife to go back to her mother's house. According to police, Ramathal is said to have visited Mahendran's house this morning and questioned him for torturing her daughter. When she tried to offer him advise, an irked Mahendran allegedly beat her on head resulting in bleeding injuries. Ramathal who was rushed to the hospital died on way.
Award for Pondicherry professor
CHENNAI DEC.18 . S.A. Abbasi, senior professor of Pondicherry University, was awarded the Environmental Engineering Design Award, the highest national award in environmental engineering, during the Indian Engineering Congress in Mumbai on Friday. The award was announced by the Institution of Engineers, Kolkata. He was chosen for the award for his life-long contribution to the innovative design of pollution control systems, environmental management systems and environmental software and prevention of industrial accidents.
