MADURAI, DEC. 18. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, has assured to expedite work on a permanent trade fair complex in the city. Inaugurating the `Chamber Trade Fair 2004,' organised by the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Tamukkam Grounds here on Friday, he said the chamber could identify a site for the complex. Even if the site happened to be less than the mandatory 15 acres, as sought by the chamber, the shortfall could be met by purchasing land from private parties in the area. Pointing out to a stiff competition among products of different countries in the domestic and international markets under the World Trade Organisations regime, he urged industrialists to produce quality products, while maintaining a low cost. This would also help to sustain the current pace of economic growth. Hence, there was an urgent need to focus more on quality and cost, Mr. Raajendiran said. P. Mohan, MP, hoped that a direct flight to Colombo would soon be introduced from Madurai. He said the demand for upgrading the Madurai airport as an international terminal was the need of the hour, since many people from Maldives, Malaysia and Singapore come to the city for medical treatment. He also urged the Collector to create a children's traffic park in the city. Valarmathi Jebaraj and N. Nanmaran, MLAs, spoke. S. Rethinavelu, chamber president, welcomed the gathering.
