Sharp fall in humidity

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 31.3 degrees Celsius and minimum of 18.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Humidity, which was recorded at 91 per cent in the morning, fell to 61 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

Following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Saturday: Groundnut oil - 50.50, palmolein oil - 40 sunflower oil - 52.50, tamarind (flower variety) - 35 to 42, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 45 to 54, chillies (refrigerated) - 20 to 27, chillies - 12 to14, rice (2716) - 12, rice superfine - 12.50, rice samba masoori -- 13 to 14, rice sona masoori - 15 to 16, black gram (pottu minapappu) -24.50, red gram (kandipappu) - 23, red gram (pandiripalem) - 24.50, red gram (Nagpur) 28.

Power shutdown

Power will be shut down in Governorpet Section for shifting of transformer from 7 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday. The areas that will be affected are Varun towers surrounds, Sk.Mohiddin St., Durgaiah St. and part of Jaleel St.

Lucky draw winner

Ch. Venkata Ratnam of Satyanarayanapuram won a projection television in the lucky draw organised by Sonovision Enterprises. The managing partner, P. Bhaskara Moorthy, said coupons were given to customers for the lucky draw and in the last four months four colour televisions, four refrigerators and four washing machines were given to winners. A bumper draw would conducted on New Year's Day and winners would be given a Maruthi car, four colour televisions, four refrigerators and four washing machines as New Year gifts.

Youth does city proud

Vijayawada-born Cheruvu Srinivas Manikandar, 13, was selected by the UK-based National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY). Members of the academy are given special training in debate, elocution, discussions and sports. They also have special access to the National Library and are guided by a team of experts from different universities up to the age of 19 in all fields of learning through personal coaching. Srinivas is the son of Chandrasekhar a surgeon, who moved to UK from Vijayawada.
