TIRUCHI, DEC. 18 . Change in attitude towards work ethics and development of effective communication skills were considered essence of enhancing human resource capability, at the inaugural of a two-day regional seminar on `Core Competencies for Effective Human Resource Intervention', organised by the P.G. Department of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, St. Joseph's College, here recently. Human resource management professionals should develop the art of persuasion and be articulate to sell their ideas with clarity, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, C. Thangamuthu, said, inaugurating the workshop. Even scientific researches warranted good presentation to be accepted as successful. Also, through adopting a human resource management approach, employers can derive maximum productivity, Dr. Thangamuthu said, emphasising `soft technology' constituting inter-personal relationship, adherence to value system, disposure to others etc. Citing the instance of economic progress achieved by countries termed as Asian Tigers, he said their work ethics was such that they worked for more than 50 hours a week. At the macro level, there must be a favourable environment to bring out human resource management skills. Equally important was the quality of governance, which, he said, must be transparent, responsive and efficient. The involvement of individuals in decision-making was bound to increase their efficiency. In the context of globalisation, the paradigm of human resources has changed, the Vice-Chancellor, said, urging students to be ready to face stiffer competition. There was a big challenge of choice before them to get the best of the market. It is essential to upgrade the skills on a constant basis to be in the reckoning of job market, he insisted. In the area of education, the concept of human resource management played a phenomenal role in moulding the thinking of students, raising them from the level of achievers of mere technical skills to bringing about an attitudinal change which would help them get rid of their personal whims and fancies. Presiding over the seminar, the principal, Fr. S. John Britto, said enhancement of human resource potential provided an edge to attaining core competency. There has been a sea change in HR approach to education, he said. The workshop involves sessions on `Emerging Trends in Human Resource Management', `Competency Mapping', `The New HRD The Paradigm of Empowerment', and `Identifying and Enhancing Core Competencies'.
