KOCHI, DEC. 18. A coconut-processing unit to manufacture desiccated coconut, coconut cream and coconut milk will be set up at Vyttila in Ernakulam by Kerafed, a State Government venture in the cooperative sector. The foundation stone for the unit will be laid by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, on Sunday. The function will be presided over by the Agriculture Minister, K.R. Gowriamma. The Kerafed Chairman, N. Vasudevan, said at a press conference here on Friday that the unit, to be set up at a cost of Rs.540 lakhs, would produce 1000 tonnes of desiccated coconut, 2100 tonnes of cream and 3000 tonnes of coconut milk annually. About 50 per cent of the production will be exported. Coconut procurement centres will be started in districts to collect coconuts from farmers directly.
