This Day That Age
Gen. K. S. Thimmaya, who is now on a holiday in Mercara, "fined" himself five rupees because, unaware of the law in force there prohibiting smoking in public halls, he smoked when he addressed a meeting on December 17. He delivered a long address and at the end of an hour he stopped for a break of ten minutes, during which he smoked. When this was brought to his notice by pressmen, the General immediately "fined" himself and sent the fine, along with a letter of regret, to the State Law Minister, Mr. K. Mallappa. Mr. Mallappa, who received the letter and the fine amount, said this act would prove an example to young men to obey the laws of the land. The Minister sent the amount in the name of the General to the Coorg Children's Fund.
