This Day That Age
Mr. M. C. Chagla, Chief Justice of Bombay, said in Bombay on December 19 that the historians in future would call the present India-China relationship an "era of the resurgence of Asia." Presiding over a public reception given to a Chinese cultural delegation by the Indo-China Friendship Association at the Liberty Cinema, he said the friendship between the people of China and India did not arise out of any treaty or out of fear but out of bonds binding them through centuries. Asia had given to the world many religions in the past, valuable spiritual messages, and these messages flourished for many years. For a while, Asia went to sleep and to-day she was awake from that slumber. "To-day, Asia is on the march. It is a march towards peace and social justice." Turning to the criticism that a risk was being run in having contact with the Communist countries, Mr. Chagla said he was unable to understand how intelligent people in India could seriously think that the only ties between the countries could be political ties. There were many things in China which we would have to study, understand, appreciate and learn, he added .
