Safety on trains

Sir, — The editorial, "No compromise on safety" (Dec. 16), refers to the outdated `paper line clearance system'. How outdated the system is can be understood by the fact that it was introduced in the 19th century. "Line clear" messages were exchanged through Morse Telegraphy and later over the phone. The possibility of human error was always there.

With the introduction of "Block Instruments," the possibility of allowing more than one train at the same time on a section due to human error was almost entirely eliminated. But the railway administration kept the paper line system as a standby. And by putting it into use on a busy section, it is compromising safety.

V. Krishnamachari,
Mumbai
