Re-engaging religion

Sir, — The article, "Re-engaging organised religion" (Dec. 17) is excellent. Temporal matters in religious institutions should be left to experts while the clergy should confine itself to leading devotees in prayers and interpreting the religious scriptures.

Nandi Joseph,
Chennai

Sir, — The article is well analysed, timely and impartial. The suggestions are not only applicable to the Kanchi Mutt but also to institutions of other religions.

S. Haja Mohideen,
Chennai

Sir, — Religious bodies such as the Ramakrishna Mutt have a much larger base of educational and health institutions, which have set a tradition of excellence. The expansion of the Kanchi Mutt's activities has been taking place only recently. To continue the good work is well within the capacity of the eminent followers of the Mutt.

A. Krishnamurthy,
Chennai
