Assurance to parents

TUMKUR DEC. 19. Sunanda P.K., President of the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat, assured the parents of children studying at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tumkur, here on Sunday that she will urge the Union Government not to close down the school. Speaking at a meeting of the vidyalaya's Parents-Teachers' Association, Ms. Sunanda asked parents not to be worried over the future of the school. The meeting was convened in the wake of reports that Kendriya Sanghatan, which manages the school, is displeased over the school not having its own campus, and is considering either shifting the school or closing it down. Ms. Sunanda said she has asked Congress leader and former MP G.S. Basavaraju to lead a delegation to the Centre to ensure that the school is not closed down. The meeting was told that Rs. 2.25 crores was available for developing the school campus.

`Dhavala' in Kannada

CHAMARAJANAGAR DEC. 19. B.S. Sannaiah, chief of the National Jain Manuscripts Registration Project, has said that every Jain household should have a copy of "Dhavala," the Jain scripture. Delivering a lecture here at a function to release the Kannada translation of Dhavala, he said that owing to the efforts of Charukeerti Bhattaraka Swamiji of Shravanabelagola and 21 Jain scholars, Dhavala, which was available only in Prakrit and Hindi, has been translated into Kannada. He said it took 25 years to translate Dhavala from Prakrit to Hindi.

Car festival in Tumkur

TUMKUR DEC. 19. Thousands of devotees gathered for the Mahapushpa Rathotsava of Vijaya Vittala Swamy at Vishwa Shanti Ashram on National Highway No. 4, 45 km from here, on Sunday. The car festival marks the conclusion of the five-day Aradhana Mahotsava of Bhadragiri Keshavadas. The car proceeded along the highway, even as several troupes rendered bhajans. A Dharma Sabha was organised as part of the utsav. Sri Rangapriya Swamiji of Ashtanga Yoga Vigyan Mandir, Sri Charamurthy Shivarudra Swamiji of Belimutt, Sri Japananda Saraswati of Ramakrishna Sevashram, Sri Keshavananda Bharati Swamiji of Edaneermutt and Sri Namadevananda Bharati Swamiji of Gondhi Samsthan delivered benedictions. Bhadragiri Achutadas, president of Dasashram; Rama Keshavadas, president of Vishwa Shanti Ashram; and Sarvothama Das, its secretary, were present.

Court order welcomed

HUBLI DEC. 19. The biennial conference of the Akhila Karnataka Rajya Raste Sarige Noukarara Mahamandala (federation of the employees of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) has termed historic the judgment of the Karnataka High Court holding the repeal of the Karnataka Contract Carriages Acquisition Act as a violation of the Constitution and directing the State Government to cancel all permits given. A resolution passed at the two-day conference of the federation, which ended today, said transport workers will continue to resist privatisation of the public transport. The resolution demanded that as a corollary to the directive given by the High Court, the State Government should cancel the notification issued on December 31, 2003, permitting private operators to ply buses on city routes within a radius of 20 km from the district headquarters with the exception of Bangalore and cancel the permit given to Bendre Nagar Sarige to run buses between Hubli and Dharwad. K.S. Sharma, veteran trade union leader, who has been elected president of the federation, presided over the meeting.
