`Streamline distribution of kerosene'

By Our Staff Reporter

UDHAGAMANDALAM, DEC. 19. The need to streamline the distribution of kerosene in the Nilgiris has been emphasised by the CPI (M). In a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, the District Secretary, CPI (M), N.Vasu, alleged that complaints regarding improper distribution of the fuel were increasing.

There was considerable demand for kerosene in this season, but many of the ration cardholders were not getting the quantity assured. The order of the Government was that families without LPG connections should be given 10 litres of kerosene. However, they were being given only eight litres of which half-a-litre get wasted as a way of spilling by the sales staff while pouring it in the cans, he alleged.

Evaporation loss

Every month, the Nilgiris received 500 lorry loads (each 12,000 litres) of kerosene. While the officials concerned claimed that evaporation accounted for a loss of about 120 litres in each load, Mr. Vasu wondered how it could happen when only the sealed tankers reached here from Coimbatore. They were opened only after being certified by officers in responsible positions that the seals were intact. He contended that evaporation could only be minimal in the district. The shortage of kerosene reportedly due to `line loss' should be thoroughly investigated.
