Gwandaru wins

PUNE, DEC. 19. Kenya's Douglas Mwangi Gwandaru won the Pune marathon while his compatriot Jane Mula won the half marathon for women at the 19th international marathon held here on Sunday.

Gwandaru, who clocked 2 hours 21 minutes and 2 seconds, was awarded Rs. 2.5 lakhs, a certificate and a medal for his efforts.

Patrick Mashani Wairagi (Kenya) and Vladamir Kotov (South Africa) came second and third, timing 2:22:06 and 2:22:56 respectively.

Mula clocked 1:11:59 to win the half marathon for women and was awarded Rs. 1 lakh, a certificate and a medal.

Timafeiva Irina of Russia (1:12:05) and Borisova Tatiana of Kyrgyztan (1:12:36) took the next two positions.

Havaldar Shivdan Singh of the Army Sports Institute came fifth in the marathon event with a timing of 2:23:32 while Madhuri Gurnule (1:14:45) came in fourth in the women's half marathon.

Filmstars Aditya Pancholi, Rati Agnihotri, Amol Palekar and former cricket board (BCCI) president Raj Singh Dungarpur were present at the start of the marathon.
